BOTANY DOWNS CARNIVAL

Last Friday Botany Downs held it's school carnival. I think it was a big success. Many ex students turned up and the community was out in force.
I tended the Jolly Jar stand.
Lots of goodies were available to buy inside these creative little jars.
People loved rummaging through them and peeking inside.
Towards the end of the chilly night the jars shrunk but people kept returning to see what was left.
Loom bands, party poppers and lollies were a favourite.

    Ignore No More

    Created on August 21, 2014
    lock
Tired of her children ignoring her calls and messages, this mother has designed a new phone app called Ignore No More!
When a call is ignored, this new app allows the parent to lock their child’s phone so that their only options are to either call their parents back or reach emergency services in case of emergency.
When locked, the only person the phone can reach is the phone that locked it – this means no texting friends, no facebook, no photos…nothing until the parent decides to unlock the phone again.
The mother behind this app is Sharon Standifird from Texas, who designed the app after becoming sick of her teenage son refusing to answer any of her calls.
Since she started using the app, Sharon says her son now answers her calls and messages much faster than ever before!
What do you think though? A genius invention or a bit over the top?
    WALT: infer

We can infer that Sharon (inventor of app) might or could be a single mother with lots of responsibilities so that is probably why Sharon created the application to stop her son from ignoring her phone calls. We can also infer that teenage son does not get away with much because his mother, sick and tired of being ignored, invented an app so that he would have to call her back.

Car crash survivor gains new talent

A 22 year old Australian man woke up from a week-long coma with an unexpected new talent – he can now speak fluent Mandarin!
Ben McMahon was put into the coma after a serious car accident and his new language skills were triggered after he saw an Asian nurse at the hospital.
Ben told the nurse “Excuse me nurse, I feel really sore here,” in perfect Mandarin. He says he wasn't instantly aware that he wasn't speaking English, and explained that he simply began speaking what felt natural to him.
Ben had learned Mandarin at school but had never reached the level where he could speak the language fluently.
Ben also found he could write in Mandarin and continued to speak the language for a few days while he was recovering and then had to relearn English!
After Ben had recovered he enrolled in a Mandarin class at University, began Mandarin walking tours, entered an international Chinese language competition and even co-hosted a Chinese TV show.
One of his friends says that Ben can speak Mandarin better than some Chinese, Japanese and Korean people he knows.
Doctors are not sure how the accident allowed Ben to gain the Mandarin skills but one theory is that the part of the brain that knew English was damaged and the part that deals with Mandarin woke up and took over.
    Some crazy stuff, right?!
    WALT Infer
From this article we can infer that he learnt Mandarin before the car crash
and couldn't speak fluently. The serious shock he got by the crash,
changed his circuitry in his brain that swapped  languages.
We can infer this because in the text it says that he was in
a week-long coma so the injuries would be pretty serious.
We have made these Inferences because the article says Ben McMahon speaks fluent Mandarin after the crash,it also talks about Ben relearning English.

    R.P's inferring
I can infer that Ben is very popular at school because he has many fellow class mates that think he has got quite a load of talent, speaking two languages fluently. I can also infer that the car crash was very dangerous for him to wake up from a coma  in hospital speaking a different language.

Gold bars buried on UK beach

A German artist has hidden£10,000 (nearly $20,000 NZD)  worth of gold bars on a beach in the UK.
Michael Sailstofer said he had hidden them on a beach in Folkestone.
hundreds of people have started digging for gold which is part of a three month art festival. The organisers say diggers can keep any gold they find.
So far around 3 bars have been found.
But it’s not going to be very easy to find the gold. The artist has buried hundreds of small metal rings called washers to throw gold hunters off the scent.
There are only 30 bars of gold hidden on the beach.
The organisers will never know if the gold has been found or not as they have no way of tracking the
    small bars
                                                                WALT-Infer
We can infer that the German artist is very rich. I know this because he has hidden 30 gold bars that are worth $20,000 NZD
I can infer that he also is a clever man I know this because he has made it very hard to find the gold because he also buried hundreds of small metal watches to throw gold hunters off the scent

Grand theft toddler!!! CD JC AE

    Grand Theft Toddler
    jeep
It was a case of grand theft auto, but what the Police weren't expecting, was for the driver to be a toddler!
A 3 year old boy, wearing only a diaper, decided to cure his boredom by climbing into a Jeep and managed to knock it out of gear, sending him and the vehicle rolling down the street, through an intersection and into the side of a house.
Unfazed by the adventure, the boy then toddled back home to watch cartoons while residents and Police cleared up the minor damage and looked into the incident.
An officer found the boy back at his home, happily watching cartoons as if nothing had ever happened.
The toddler’s parents were not home at the time and the relative left in charge of the boy was sleeping. The 22 year old was reprimanded by Police for failing to watch the child in his care.
Thankfully no one was hurt, and damaged to the car and house was relatively minor, but the incident could have ended much worse and is a warning that children must be supervised at all times.

    WALT:infer
We can infer that the parent's of the toddler were not conscientious parents because the car was left unlocked and the baby sitter they chose was not doing his job properly. The evidence that proves this is the parents were not at home and the babysitter was asleep.
We can infer that the toddler was very mischievous and adventurous. We know this because he is able to open a door and  knock the gear out of place.  Also we can infer that the police man was very surprised and we know this because he saw a 3 year old toddler driving!!! That is not normal. The toddler is very bright and we know this because when the baby came back home he was sitting in front of the TV watching cartoons and acting like nothing happen.

    Dance of the Palace Guard

    Created on September 8, 2014
    guard
The Queen’s Guard at Buckingham Palace are known for their odd headwear and their ability to keep a straight face no matter what you do to try and make them laugh – but one guard decided to shake things up a bit!
The guard decided that it was his turn to try to make they onlookers laugh and he succeeded in his task by pirouetting in slow motion in an odd marching dance.
However, the British army are not laughing. In fact the guard is now under investigation for his antics after a video of the incident went viral online.
What do you think? Should the guard be punished or should the army let it go? After all he was still doing his job…and what a boring one it must be too!

                                                                  WALT Infer

From this article I can infer that the guard is funny and has a good sense of humour, he is also a bit of a rebel and does not mind breaking the rules. We know this because he pirouetted while on duty and he is not supposed to.
I can also infer that the British army is very strict and do not like rebels in their ranks. I know this because they are investigating his antics.

    The Tree of 40 Fruit

    tree

Art and the magic of science to create ‘The Tree of 40 fruit.’
The name of this amazing creation does not disappoint, with the tree producing 40 different varieties of peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries, and even almonds.
Sam’s creation is even more amazing due to the fact that some of the fruits are ancient and are varieties that are very hard to come by.
The tree itself is a stunning work of art, with crimson, pink, purple and white blooms.
Sam has placed 16 unique 40 fruit trees around the USA in museums, community centres and private art collections and visits each twice a year to prune and collect grafts for future trees.
It takes a total of 5 years for each tree to develop and then another 4 years for it to produce the 40 fruits.
Sam hopes his creation will teach people of all the different varieties of plums, apricots and peaches that were once available and perhaps raise question as to why there is such a small variety available in stores.
You have to admit…this is some yummy art!

    WALT: INFER

From what my buddy & I have read this creation does not disappoint as it grows 40 different types of fruit.
from this text I can infer that this person spent a long time to develop the tree using science. We know this because it took 5 years for each tree to develop and another years to grow fruit. We can also infer that he has a strong interest in horticulture and it's history. We know this because it says he wants to teach people about fruit from long ago.

    The ghost of Anne Tottenham?

21 year old English man, Thomas Beavis, snapped a pretty spooky photo whilst on a tour of a haunted mansion in Ireland.
Thomas was flicking through the photos on his camera from the tour of Lotus Hall and was shocked to find a ghostly figure of what appears to be a young girl in the background of one of his shots.
Thomas says that everyone was already feeling a little spooked after the tour but after he showed his friends the photo, they freaked out.
Legend tells of Lotus Hall being home to the Tottenham family in 1766 and soon after the youngest child, Anne, became ill and claimed to have witnessed a paranormal experience of her own – leading her parents to lock the girl away in one of the rooms until she died.
Thomas says he got the chills when he found the spooky figure in the photo and still doesn’t quite believe what he has captured on camera.
So is it a trick of the light? Or is it the ghost of Anne Tottenham?

    WALT infer.
From this article we can infer that Thomas believes in ghosts.
We know this because the text says Thomas says he got the chills when he found the spooky figure in the photo and still doesn’t quite believe what he has captured on camera.
We can infer that the parents were frightened and didn't want to hear this stuff. We know this because they locked their daughter away.

    Restaurant bans ketchup

    Created on September 9, 2014
    ketchup
If you are over 10 years old, then you are now banned from having ketchup with any meal at the Mad Fresh Bistro in Florida.
The owner of the restaurant, also the chief, says he is tired of customers asking for ketchup with their meal, especially with his burgers which he claims do not need ketchup as they already have sauce on them.
There is a warning on the restaurant’s website telling customers that is they are over 10 years old, ketchup will not be provided.
If that wasn’t crazy enough, the restaurant also will not provide salt with meals, saying that customers should trust the chef to provide what the dish needs before it is served.
Many customers are unhappy with these new rules as they believe they should have whatever they want with their food since they are paying for it.
One customer tried to sneak ketchup into the restaurant and was kicked out!
    Would you eat here?

    WALT INFER
From this article I can infer that the owner is very proud of his burgers and does not want them ruined by flooding them with loads of ketchup. I also can infer that the owner is a bit of a control freak as he thinks he knows how much salt is enough salt.
I can also infer that at some stage he has had some ketchup loving groupies in his store who have obviously gone overboard with their ketchup.
I have made these inferences because the article says the owner has banned ketchup and will not provide salt. The article also talks about customers sneaking ketchup.
